Monica Viera

Monica Viera is a neurodivergent LGBTQ author from East Los Angeles who loves jazz and punk rock.

“Bone Dry,” “The Rose Water Incident of 2022,” and “Weary Be the Wanton”

It was lonely having
An anorexic mother
Who was often more concerned
About fitness and image
Then tending to the ache of my feelings
She exercised all the time, and ate light
She strove to be light,
And perhaps thought as her daughter,
I shouldn’t have such heavy feelings
Poetry
Issue 65, September 2022
Issues Archive

“The Yolk of the Neighborhood,” “Afraid of Your Sobriety” and “Rented Halves”

I was walking in the hot, still LA heat
That blows nowhere, so your own thoughts begin to circulate
And you go mad
And upon walking on some particularly rocky asphalt,
I lost my footing
And hit the back of my head and heard a
CRAACK
Poetry
Issue 55, November 2021
Issues Archive

“Anatomy of a Honeycomb,” “Basket of Needles” and “Cabin on Detox Island”

Post-mortem,
After having lived a life
In and out of mental hospitals
For what could only have been simplified…
Of attacks acute sweetness or withdrawal thereof
An autopsy was performed on me,
And a honeycomb for a heart
Poetry
Issue 48, April 2021
