Anne Schuchman

Anne Schuchman is a writer and translator. Her nonfiction work has appeared in The Massachusetts Review, The Saranac Review, and Apricity Press, among others. Her translations from Italian have been published by The Southern Review, The Los Angeles Review, The Ilanot Review, The Queens Review, and The Journal of Italian Translation. Schuchman holds a Ph.D. in Italian Studies from NYU and an MFA in Creative Nonfiction and Literary Translation from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her work has been recognized with awards from the Bread Loaf Translator’s Conference, Fulbright, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and several of her prose pieces have been named as finalists for nonfiction awards, including The Good Life Review HoneyBee Prize in Short NonFiction (2025), The Plentitudes Prizes in Nonfiction (2025), and Women on Writing (2023).

I can remember each and every sting. And how even a dead bee can sting. “Hm, look at that,” my father said. And to my five-year-old eyes, the gold-and-black stripes on the hallway mat looked like a key—a shiny key that would unlock who knew what magical adventure. So I picked it up. I don’t remember much else except that I went to kindergarten late that day, my thumb still swollen and red.
