Amy Impero

Amy L. Impero is a New Jersey–based writer, artist, teacher, mother, survivor, and recovery advocate. Her work explores incarceration, mental health, addiction, shame, resilience, love, and the unexpected moments of humor that help people endure even the darkest circumstances. Drawing from her experiences in the Hudson County Correctional Facility, she writes with honesty, compassion, and a deep belief in the power of storytelling to challenge assumptions and restore humanity.
Amy is the author of the forthcoming memoir The Waiting Room, a story of survival, sisterhood, and rebuilding a life after incarceration. Her essays, many adapted from the memoir, examine the relationships, music, creativity, and hope that persist in places where people are often forgotten. Her work has appeared in Wingless Dreamer. Through her writing, she hopes to encourage conversations about justice, recovery, mental health, and the resilience that can emerge from even the most difficult chapters of life.

The Soundtrack They Couldn’t Confiscate

Before jail, my life had a soundtrack.

George Michael poured through my car speakers with the windows down. The Goo Goo Dolls rode shotgun on late-night drives home. Broadway cast albums filled my kitchen while I painted. Concerts were a weekly ritual.
